Polio virus found in Gaza sewage but only IDF soldiers can be vaccinated [Original post] Dear world, you are becoming dirtier everyday, what will move you? A nuclear bomb? [Tags: Hospitals, Water, Humanitarian Aid, Blocking Aid, Local Governance, Genocidal Intent, Sanitation, Water, Epidemic, Infrastructure, Healthcare System] [Found by: Bisan Owda] [Location: Gaza > Khan Younis > Deir al-Balah > North Gaza > Southern Gaza > Central Gaza] [Archivist Notes] Context Polio is highly contagious and transmits mainly through contact with contaminated feces, water or food. It can cause difficulty breathing and irreversible paralysis, usually in the legs. It strikes young children in particular and is sometimes fatal. Health crisis: Diseases like polio, hepatitis A, meningitis, and impetigo are spreading due to poor hygiene and destroyed infrastructure, with hospitals overwhelmed and many deaths reported, especially among children. Lack of hygiene supplies : Basic supplies like soap are unavailable for months, contributing to widespread illness. Humanitarian organizations struggle to provide essentials due to movement restrictions and limited aid deliveries. Chronology June 19 : Gaza’s Ministry of Health said it had detected “component poliovirus type 2” in coordination with UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency June 21 : The Israeli army begins to vaccinate against polio all soldiers operating in Gaza or due to enter there soon , after a high concentration of the virus was found in sewage in Gaza. source End of July : The World Health Organization is “extremely worried” about the possibility of an outbreak of the highly infectious polio virus in Gaza after traces were found in wastewater. Immunisation rates in Gaza and the occupied West Bank were optimal before the conflict. Polio vaccine coverage was estimated at 99% in 2022, although it had declined to 89% last year, according to the latest data. the “decimation” of Gaza health system" - with only 16 out of the territory's 36 hospitals partially functional - as well as the "lack of security, access obstruction, constant population displacement, shortages of medical supplies, poor quality of water and weakened sanitation" have contributed to reduce immunisation rates and increase the risk of diseases spreading. First case at the end of July : According to the WHO, a 10-month-old baby had been paralysed by the type-2 strand of the virus - the first case in Gaza in 25 years. Augustus 29 : Israel and Hamas have agreed to brief ceasefires in parts of Gaza to allow the safe distribution of the polio vaccine, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). These pauses will begin Sunday and occur in three phases: central Gaza first, then the south, and finally the north. Each pause will last three days, from 6am to 3pm, and may extend to a fourth day if necessary. Vaccination Campaign planning The WHO and partners are launching a campaign to vaccinate 640,000 children in Gaza against polio, despite the ongoing war and damaged healthcare system. Timeline by Phased Approach : A three-day campaign will start Sunday in central Gaza during a "humanitarian pause" from 6am to 3pm, with potential extensions. It will later move to southern and northern Gaza during similar pauses. Campaign Duration and Goals : The campaign will last three days in each zone, with a potential fourth day if needed. The goal is to vaccinate over 640,000 children under 10 across Gaza in two rounds, with the second dose administered in four weeks. Vaccination Sites : Around 160 sites, including medical centers, hospitals, and schools, are designated for vaccinations, mainly in Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah. Challenges : Significant obstacles include damaged infrastructure—65% of roads are affected and 19 of 36 hospitals are out of service. Security concerns have also halted aid group movements. The campaign is described as a "massive effort" involving thousands of workers, with significant planning and preparation. Health Worker Involvement : Over 2,180 health and community outreach workers are involved, working through 392 fixed points and almost 300 mobile teams. September 8 Director of field hospitals in Gaza Strip, Dr. Marwan Al-Hamas : The Ministry of Health decides to extend the polio vaccination campaign for an additional day in order to reach the largest number of children under the age of ten. source Progress of Emergency Polio Vaccination Campaign: Phase I: The campaign began on 1 September in central Gaza, reaching nearly 87,000 children on the first day Humanitarian Pauses : Area-specific pauses in fighting have allowed the vaccination efforts to proceed. These pauses are critical for ensuring safe access to health facilities for children and outreach workers. It was already broken in several places. Some incidents happens in Central Gaza Strip during the first days of the campaign. source Following the completion of the first phase of the polio vaccination campaign yesterday, conducted in areas with temporary ceasefire pauses, Palestinians are questioning when the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip will end. " Right now, you are vaccinating our children against polio, a simple virus. But every day they are killing them. In just a few hours, the truce will end, and the shelling and killing of children will resume" Huda Al-Sheikh: A mother from Gaza from Telegram: QudsNEN Phase II : There is difficulty in transporting the vaccine because there is no fuel. " A medical worker speaks to Quds Feed about the process of vaccinating children in the southern Gaza Strip" Source Phase III : Islam Bader is reporting here that the campaign was supposed to start on Monday in North Gaza but people have been informed that it'll be delayed until Tuesday because the vaccines have not entered yet (thanks IDF) and that medical delegations are being completely blocked from entering. starting 4:03 in the following Source Falafel stall massacre ▪ On September 10, in the Morning, the Israeli army bombed a popular food “basta” in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, killing 6 and injured several Palestinians, in the east of Gaza City is only a few dozen or hundreds of meters from the “Asaad Al-Saftawi”, “Jaffa” and “Al-Tuffah” schools, which have been identified as safe vaccination centers in the Al-Tuffah and Al-Daraj neighborhoods. Following Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, by this attack, “Israel seriously undermines polio vaccination campaign in Gaza". Incident at the North Gaza border On September 9 at 8:00 PM , the Israeli army stopped a UN and WHO convoy in northern Gaza, loaded with medicine and fuel, as it entered the Gaza Strip to interrogate Palestinian "suspects." Source Rumours are spreading simultaneously on X on all Zionist accounts , alleging that the Israeli army stopped a UN car participating in the anti-polio campaign because an activist/terrorist was among them. UN statement around 9:00 PM: "We are aware of an incident involving UN personnel and vehicles in northern Gaza, and the priority is the safety of our personnel."** Source UNRWA statement (Philippe Lazzarini) around "The Israeli Army stopped a UN convoy on its way to northern #Gaza for more than eight hours today (Monday) despite prior detailed coordination. The convoy had both national & international staff traveling to roll out the #polio vaccination campaign for children in Gaza city and northern Gaza. The convoy was stopped at gun point just after the Wadi Gaza checkpoint with threats to detain UN staff. Heavy damage was caused by bulldozers to the UN armoured vehicles. All staff & convoy are now released & back safely in the UN base. We are not able to confirm whether the polio campaign will take place tomorrow, (Tuesday) in northern Gaza. This significant incident is the latest in a series of violations against UN staff including shootings at convoys & arrests by the Israeli Armed Forces at checkpoints despite prior notification. UN Staff must be allowed to undertake their duties in safety + be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law. Gaza is no different." Source Dr. Munir Al-Barash, Director General of the Ministry of Health : The occupation is obstructing the entry of the convoy of medicines and polio vaccinations, which leads to the failure to start the vaccination campaign in northern Gaza. Source Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor : The occupation army’s arrest of a UN mission yesterday and interrogation of its members as they moved from the southern Gaza Strip to the north clearly demonstrates its intention to disrupt humanitarian and relief efforts. Cynical context of this humanitarian campaign Gazans feel like they are part of a "dark game," constantly moving to avoid bombings while still facing risks. Pauses for polio vaccination are set in specific areas, with both stationary and mobile points available for people to get the vaccine, but accessing them is very difficult. There is skepticism among medical staff about the success of the vaccination campaign, with some believing Israel is using it as a smokescreen to claim it allows humanitarian aid, while larger issues remain unaddressed. Humanitarian aid is barely reaching Gaza, with significantly diminished levels of assistance and a growing number of people in need. Aid organizations face numerous obstacles, such as not being allowed to move essential supplies (e.g., vegetables, hygiene kits) between different parts of Gaza despite severe shortages. Conditions in Gaza are described as inhumane, with people barely surviving. "Now, in the north of Gaza, there is no vegetables on the commercial market, but, ironically, hygiene kits are getting in to the north. What we are not permitted to do is move vegetables from the south to the north, where they’re needed, or hygiene kits from the north to the south. And this is just one sort of example of the various different hurdles and obstacles that are deliberately being placed (by Israel) in our way." Arwa Damon, an American journalist and humanitarian who covered the Middle East and other regions. Source More than 400 Palestinians were killed and at least 900 were wounded during the 12 days of the vaccination campaign, according to figures by Palestinian health authorities. End of the first round of vaccination (initial dose of the oral vaccine) Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s chief, says the first round of the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza reached 90 percent coverage.* “Our next challenge is to provide children with their second dose at the end of September”* Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X, renewing his call for an immediate ceasefire in the enclave. Wadha, 55, tried to defend a family member who was being attacked by settlers outside the door. The settlers then attacked them both while the soldiers fired into the air.The main road leading to Sheab Al Botom is closed by the occupation, I entered the village via a secondary road on which only a high car can drive. I arrived at the village a few minutes after the attack began. After the soldiers fired into the air, the attack ended and the settlers fled. I evacuated the two injured people with my car to join the ambulance on the highway at the entrance to my village of Tuwani. They were both bleeding from their heads, there is still the smell of their blood in my car, it was horrible. They are in the hospital now, I hope they return home soon. This is not the first nor the last attack; As long as we continue to see a silent and complicit international community, this will continue to happen, as we see in Gaza today. Israel is trying to normalize the daily massacre, also settler violence, house demolitions and many other crimes. It’s time to hold Israel accountable, enough hypocrisy!*" Source: Sami Huraini’s Instagram account

The UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported “horrific scenes” at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis following the attack. “Visiting the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis yesterday, I witnessed some of the most horrific scenes I have seen in my nine months in Gaza,” Scott Anderson, Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator and Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza, said in a statement. In recent weeks, the Israeli military has expanded its immediate displacement orders to several areas of the Gaza Strip, pushing Palestinians into the “humanitarian zone” of Al-Mawasi. The so-called “safe zone,” however, has repeatedly been targeted by Israeli attacks. The Israeli army claimed that the latest attack targeted senior commanders of Gaza’s ruling group. “The Israeli allegations are nonsense and they aim to justify the horrifying massacre. All the martyrs are civilians and what happened was a grave escalation of the war of genocide, backed by the American support and world silence,” the group stated. Moazzaz Obayat, a 39-year-old Palestinian bodybuilder arrested without charges, during a violent raid storming his house, in front of his 4 children and his pregant woman. He held under administrative detention, which allows detention without formal charges. He was detained in the Ofer Negev Prison. On July 10, 2024 , he is released showing signs of severe medical neglect and torture, revealing the inhumane conditions imposed on Palestinian prisoners by the Israeli occupation. On October 16, 2024 , three months after his released, he was re-abducted, at dawn , during a raid by the Israely soldiers in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, after storming his home. He was obviously subject of sever abuses during his detention : Obayat, once weighing 109kg of muscle, lost over half his body weight and is now emaciated, unable to walk unaided. The video footage of Abayat’s frail state upon release has spread widely on Arab social media, but has seen little coverage in Western media. Impact on his mental health The first days, Obayat no longer recognizes his father or the details of his past life. His wife, Noor, and mother collapsed upon seeing him leave jail in a broken state. he expressed the feeling of never being able to come back to life, of being mentally imprisoned for life. His testimony shed significant light on the systematic abuse of detainees he reports being beaten, tortured, starved, and deprived of water throughout his imprisonment. his leg and his hans were broken in detention and left untreated. he describes being beaten while naked, losing consciousness after being hit with an iron bar. he describes his experience in the Negev prison as particularly harsh: freezing conditions, insufficient water, and minimal, poor-quality food. he states that prisoners were subjected to epidemics like scabies due to poor hygiene and limited showers. he recounts brutal physical abuse, including being hit and "search" in private parts with iron stick (in Ofer Prison) "We almost died," he says, in an iron caravan where he remembers inhaling gas and feeling a lack of oxygen (In Gush Etzion Detention center). A place where, he later describes, they beat them "with iron clubs until their heads, feet and hands were covered in blood. he was the witness of the murder of a friend (or a brother) Thayer Abu Asab, in prison for 18 years, since 2005, killed in "room 6", after being beaten during one hour with iron sticks on his head.(Israeli authorities confirmed was beaten to death by 19 guards on 18 November 2023) "He lay in the room for an hour, they killed him and they didn't call an ambulance or treat him." On December 4, during a violent interrogation, while sitting in a chair with his legs and arms chained behind his back, "I was given a beating that no human being can imagine." A Shin Bet (Israeli internal intelligence) officer asked him: "Are you with us or with them?", referring to Israel or Hamas."I answered honestly: 'I'm not on any side, I'm a civilian. You invaded my house and arrested me.' He didn't like what I said. He left the office and a group of three to five men came in and started beating me. They hit me with a metal baton on the head, stomach and sensitive areas of the body, on the tendons, until I lost consciousness ," he details. he adds, that, in Ofer Detention camp, access to food, hygiene or drinking water was also extremely limited : “One shower every three months,” “one litre of water for ten people in a room,” a bathroom “without running water.” As for electricity, only three hours a day, and a meal of “ten or twelve beans with a bit of cabbage” from breakfast to dinner. According to him, 2000 of the 3000 prisoners in Ofer Prison suffers od chronicle scabies. Perpetrators He names "Captain Salem, head of Nablus area, Captain Dahari (nicknamed Abu Jameel), Captain Ibri for the Gush Etzion detention center. He names the Keter unit in Ofer Prison (the worst reputation detention center, like Guantanamo or Abu Graib), under the direction of Yusuf Khnafis (nicknamed Abu Shadi), who gave the torture orders. The Prisoners Club Statement Ramallah, 16-10-2024, WAFA- The Palestinian Prisoners' Club (PPC) held the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of detainee Moaz Ebayat (37 years) from Bethlehem, who was re-arrested at dawn today, three months after his release, in a difficult and shocking health condition due to the torture he was subjected to during his 9-month administrative detention. He was released at the time from the Negev prison, which was and still is the most prominent prison witnessing torture crimes. According to the family of the detainee, Abayat, the occupation forces stormed his house at two in the morning, and when he was taken out of the house, he was beaten. (...)The Prisoners Club confirmed that Abayat is still** undergoing treatment since his release, and he needs continuous health follow-up.** He is one of thousands of detainees in the occupation prisons who are facing crimes of unprecedented level. It is worth noting that he is a former detainee who was arrested three times, and he is married and the father of five children. He did not suffer from any health problems before his previous arrest. The Prisoners Club renewed its call to international human rights institutions to restore their necessary role for which they were created, and to put an end to the ongoing genocide and the horrific crimes to which our people are being subjected, including detainees in the occupation’s prisons and camps, which have been transformed into arenas for the crime of torture since the beginning of the war of extermination, “while reaffirming that everything we are witnessing today are fixed and systematic crimes practiced by the occupation over many decades, but the only variable is the intensity and level of these crimes.” Broader Issue: Over 3,500 Palestinians are currently held under administrative detention in Israeli prisons, many from the West Bank. Human rights groups and Palestinian organizations claim that the conditions Abayat faced are common among Palestinian detainees. International Response: Israeli authorities deny the claims of abuse, stating that Obayat received medical care according to protocol. Human rights groups report restricted access to Israeli prisons, limiting information on prisoners' conditions. Obayat urges the international community to investigate Palestinian prison conditions and support his people, highlighting the lack of legal representation and international protection for detainees. source 1 source 2 source 3 ONG investigation In its August report, Welcome to Hell: The Israeli Prison System as a Network of Torture Camps' , the Israeli human rights organisation B'Tselem collects the testimonies of 55 released prisoners and relatives of inmates who point out the mistreatment to which Palestinian prisoners are subjected. (Archivist's clarification: the English spelling of Moazzaz Obayat's name varies enormously. Articles name him Moaz, Moiz, Muazzaz Moazzaz,.. and his surname is spelled Obayyat, Obayat, Obaiat, Abayat, Abayad.. We opted for the following spelling: Moazzaz Obayat).
