There was a strange peace in the moment, as if childhood itself was resisting the demand to flee. Gaza-where children learn to smile through ruins, to live while death brushes past them. A city of contradictions and quiet defiance. In the Gaza port, I saw Muhammad holding the hand of his sister Saja, and they were fishing in a dream-like calm, as if the world behind them was not on fire. A displacement tent stands behind them, and in front of them is an open sea and merciless bombardment. There was a serenity in the scene that contradicted reality, as if childhood was resisting, with two small bodies, all calls to leave. Gaza, the city that teaches its children how to smile in the storm, and how to hold on to life even though death passes by them every moment. A city of contrasts, amazement, and constancy.
