The First Line of Defense In Gaza, when the occupation bombs hit schools, hospitals, or apartment buildings, it is the Civil Defense crews who race into the rubble, pulling survivors out with little more than their hands and the simplest of tools. With "israel" blocking rescue equipment from entering Gaza, these teams face unimaginable odds and yet they remain on the frontlines, saving lives one by one, often children, from beneath the rubble. Even before stepping into the bombed sites, rescue teams must notify the occupation army to avoid being struck themselves. Yet time and again, they bomb the same sites multiple times, compounding the death toll. Since the start of the assault, at least 139 Civil Defense members have been martyred while carrying out their duty. Through her lens, filmmaker Bisan Owda follows these men and women.
