Ahmed Al-Dahes, a man in his sixties from the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, left his home as he always did, carrying the responsibility of providing for his tamily, searching for water and food amid the conditions of war. But on his way back, an airstrike hit the residential area around him, turning his simple journey into a tragedy. He was severely injured in his hand, which was immediately amputated. His leg was crushed and later fixed with metal plates. He also suffered internal injuries to his liver and partially lost his hearing due to the intensity of the explosion. Hajj Ahmed survived death, but he did not return the same. He no longer hears the world as he used to, nor moves with the ease of the man who left in the morning seeking daily sustenance... yet he is still alive, patient, carrying his pain just as the people of the city carry their stories in silence, and with a hope that never fades.

In Gaza, Palestinians are facing one of the most grueling recovery efforts in modern warfare, as they dig through an estimated 61 million tons of rubble left by Israel’s genocide, nearly 20 times more than the debris from all wars since 2008 combined. Beneath the ruins, up to 10,000 bodies remain buried. With Israel blocking the entry of excavators and heavy machinery, Palestinian civil defense teams have been forced to dig with shovels, pickaxes, and their bare hands. The Ministry of Health says 472 bodies have been recovered since the October ceasefire began, while 195 bodies returned by Israel bore signs of abuse, some bound, blindfolded, or shot. Experts warn the recovery could take up to nine months if machinery were allowed in. Yet, families continue to queue daily at hospitals, desperate for news of their missing relatives. The lack of DNA testing equipment, which Israel also bans from entering Gaza, makes identification nearly impossible.
