Testimony from Sul Aidil: They were treated with extreme cruelty as soon as they arrived at the port. The IDF showed no respect, their hands were tied behind their backs, and they were forced to kneel. Among them was an elderly delegate with a back injury who had to lie down, still with his hands tied behind him. When they were later ordered to move, everyone had to do so on their own while still restrained. The older man struggled to move, and when the others pleaded for the soldiers to help him, the IDF coldly replied that he could “do it himself.” Since their hands were tied, they had to use their feet to push and move their belongings. In prison, they were constantly disturbed every two hours, just as they were about to fall asleep, the IDF would come and bang on the cell doors or shout their names to keep them awake. The activist Thiago, who was in the opposite cell, told them that this was part of the IDF’s psychological tactic to prevent the detainees from resting, to break their spirits. Each time they were disturbed, the delegates would respond by chanting, “Free, free Palestine!” until the guards became irritated. -They were treated like criminals. One night, the IDF brought in dogs from the K9 unit and special agents who flashed lights and aimed shotguns directly at their faces to intimidate them. Testimony from Asmawi Mukhtar: The aggression escalated immediately upon their arrival at the port. Asmawi was hit, beaten, his hands twisted behind his back, his head forced down, and he was dragged along the pavement for about 200 meters. All the delegates, men and women, were forced to kneel with their heads pressed to the hot tarred ground, in a commando rest position, for nearly three hours. -Thankfully, he still had his passport with him, which he placed under his forehead to shield it from the burning pavement. Others weren’t as fortunate and had to endure the scorching heat directly on their skin. -At the immigration checkpoint, all personal belongings were confiscated, especially items that could reveal information about the mission. The transfer from the immigration area to the prison was horrific. They were packed tightly into a black maria vehicle and left inside for more than an hour, with no air conditioning or ventilation, under the blazing heat. Many struggled to breathe and nearly suffocated. Only after some time did the IDF switch on the air conditioning but they turned it to the lowest temperature at full blast for the next two hours, leaving the detainees shivering until they reached the prison. There were 17 people crammed into that small vehicle.
