Reported missing on July 16 by his brother (see attached screenshot). A photo of his body was shared on social media on July 31 in the hope someone would recognize him. His identity was confirmed today: Mahmoud Al-Khatib, lovingly known as “Hooda,” was a gentle soul with Down Syndrome. He lived in poverty with his family in Gaza and, like so many, was starved under siege. Hooda was shot and killed by Israeli forces near the Zikim Crossing, an area where he and other tens of thousands waited desperately for aid. That is where I lost a second cousin on July 20. That is where my father-in-law was critically wounded in the head yesterday. Mahmoud’s body seems to have been buried by Israeli bulldozers “perhaps to prevent stray dogs from reaching it.” Does this remind you of a story from last March? Dozens of martyrs and wounded were crammed into a single ambulance as emergency crews struggled to respond to the massacre near the Zikim crossing in northern Gaza. The victims had gone to the al-Sudaniyya area in search of aid when Israeli forces opened fire. With too few ambulances and no proper medical infrastructure left, paramedics were forced to stack bodies and injured civilians together just to evacuate them. The scene reflects the collapse of Gaza's rescue capabilities under siege and fire. Due to the lack of capabilities and ambulances, paramedics were forced to pile dozens of martyrs and wounded into one ambulance while rescuing the injured in the Sudaniya area, north of Gaza. The victims had gone there in an attempt to obtain aid from the Zikim crossing, before the occupation forces opened fire on them. With the health infrastructure completely destroyed, the paramedics had no choice but to load the martyrs and wounded on top of each other to evacuate them.
